INVESTIGATE 2: ARTIFICIAL ⟷ ORGANIC

To create the conditions in which a disruption of a space is possible, first a thorough understanding of its properties is required.

The means through which an individual can interact with the ‘Downloads’ folder space (see 1.1) can be classified as one of two types of interaction:

The ARTIFICIAL interaction. Processes and states dictated by the rules of the computer system. These include mathematical traits such as file size and format, as well as styles for graphical presentation (colours, icons, window size). Additionally, a number of automated sorting methods are offered.

ARTIFICIAL INTERACTION. Ten means of arranging files within a folder: by Name, Kind, Application, Date Last Opened, Date Added, Date Modified, Date Created, Size, Tags, None.
ARTIFICIAL INTERACTION. Four pre-designed viewing methods for displaying folder contents: as Icons, List, Columns, Cover Flow.

The ORGANIC interaction. Processes and states enacted through the actions or will of the individual user. These include the content of the files, the context that defines their presence in the local hierarchy, the moment in time at which they were downloaded and where they originated from.

ORGANIC INTERACTION. The content itself: six miscellaneous image excerpts from the Downloads folder.

In a pre-designed setting containing subjective information, the ARTIFICIAL and ORGANIC exist in unison; many artificial processes/states are ‘potentials’; choices offered to the individual as means of interaction. Likewise, organic processes and states cannot exceed the technical limitations of the platform.

Variation exists between the degree of organic influence that can be exerted within the context of particular artificial profiles. For instance, setting the Downloads folder’s arrangement setting to ‘None’ allows each individual file to be clicked, dragged and positioned at will. Providing it abides by the overarching rule of the computer’s graphical user interface and remains within the space designated as the Downloads folder, it will remain at that point in the system’s overall hierarchy.
