BRIEF REFLECTIONS ON THE VISUAL ESSAY
My intention with the visual essay was to create a tour of my virtual gallery space, adapting the lexicon and attitude of the art institution to create a medium for challenging its traditions. My script went through a number of revisions and I feel I was able to achieve this to some degree; however, I am personally unsatisfied with my delivery of the narration. I would prefer for this dialogue to be read by someone else, as I feel I do not have the personal vocal skill to capture the kind of deadpan vibe required to convey something that flirts with being both a serious exploration of rules and space, as well as a satire offering institutional critique.
I was faced with some technical difficulties when capturing ‘gameplay’ of my virtual world. With greater foresight I would have worked to ensure the movement of the camera was as smooth as possible; in its current, jittery form, I feel some of the nuance of the space is lost. As a simulation, this work is best appreciated through first-hand experience. I will aim to continue to work on the virtual world so as to bring it to a state where others can explore it for themselves.
There are a number of harsh cuts to black at a few points in the video. These were deliberate but not as effective as I had hoped. Overall, conforming to the time limit has caused the pace to suffer; several of the rooms I designed were featured in the initial edit of the video but had to be removed due to the time constraints. I chose not to include that which I felt I could not fully demonstrate in a purposeful way.
